Port St. Lucie, Fla. – Two Port St. Lucie parents are behind bars after being charged with two felony counts of child neglect each.

On Wednesday, Port St. Lucie police made a surprise visit to the residence of Kim Nguyen, 40, and Khai Tran, 43, and found their family living in unlivable conditions.

The home located at the 3800 block of Southwest Kolsted Street was soiled in dirty laundry and cluttered with spoiled food, garbage and animal feces. The home had electricity, but no running water.

When a State Department of Children and Families investigator spoke with the family, they discovered that the 9-year-old daughter does not attend school, and the 17-year-old son dropped out in May.

Tran blamed the horrible condition of the home on his wife, stating that he does not work in the area. However, he did admit that when he is home he does not help clean, and neither do the children.

The children were taken from the residence by the State Department of Children and Families child welfare workers. Tran and Nguyen were taken to the St. Lucie County jail where their bail is set at $7,500 each.
