MELBOURNE, Florida – A 36-year-old man is behind bars in Brevard County after the Melbourne Police Department received a call about a kidnapping.

The witness who called told officers that his sister’s boyfriend, Rene Obney, was holding his sister against her will in a bedroom.

The victim’s brother said he could hear his sister “gasping for air and yelling at Obney to let her go,” according to the report. The brother then heard Obney yelling at the victim to “shut the fu** up.”

Officers entered the Melbourne home and stood near the bedroom door where they heard Obney yelling at the victim and saying, “be quite or they will call the cops on me.”

Police were able to diffuse the situation and made contact with the victim. The victim told officers that the incident started over a dispute regarding their relationship.

The victim told police that Obney became enraged and threw her onto the bed. She advised that her boyfriend straddled her on the bed and began choking her with two hands around her neck.

Officers observed marks on both sides of the victim’s neck.

During the incident, the victim tried to leave the room, but Obney blocked the door and refused to let her leave, stating, “I will kill you.”

Melbourne Police then made contact with Obney who said he did not touch the victim. “She must have choked herself,” he told officers. He became very agitated and stated, “I have beat like 30 of you guys up before and you don’t mean sh** to me.”

Obney was arrested and transported to the Brevard County Jail where he was charged with false imprisonment, domestic violence by strangulation, and battery domestic violence.

Bond denied.
