ESTERO, Florida – Motorists driving on I-75 came to a standstill Monday after a civilian shoots a man who was attacking a deputy.
The suspect led police on a deadly chase along southbound I-75 until he stopped his vehicle and starting punching the deputy.
One witness saw the man attacking the deputy and heard three shots. One man then fell to the side of the road as the police officer got up.
Other drivers told police that the suspect drove past them going at least 120 mph while the deputy chased him for at least three exits.
“I watched the suspect jump out of his car and run toward the officer and tackled him,” a witness said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy involved is a 12-year veteran and is expected to be okay. The suspect who was fighting with the deputy was killed by a passerby is the one who shot him.
“The passerby, who had a Concealed Weapons License, exited his vehicle and instructed the suspect to stop beating the deputy…after noncompliance from the suspect, the passerby shot the suspect three times,” sources said.
FHP officials reopened the exit to Corkscrew Road last night at around 9 p.m.
