PALM BAY, Florida – A Melbourne man suspected of drunk driving wrecked his vehicle early Friday in Palm Bay, and battered a bystander who witnessed the crash before fleeing on foot.

Palm Bay Police and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office dispatched K-9 units to locate the suspect who caused a two-vehicle crash on Babcock Street near the I-95 overpass.

Shane Dreher, 31, was driving a 2004 Ford pickup, the report shows. Police say it’s his third DUI violation.

Palm Bay Police Lt. Steve Bland said Dreher battered one of the witnesses who saw the crash and came to help.

Dreher remains at the Brevard County Jail without bond. He will be arraigned in court December 16th on the battery charge and January 3rd on his other charges.

He was charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, DUI third violation within ten years, failure to drive in a single lane, and battery.
