VERO BEACH – A loss prevention officer from the Indian River Mall called police after catching a woman stealing from JCPenney’s in Vero Beach.

Deputies from the Indian River Sheriff’s Office arrived and found out that the suspect, Joanne Stocking, 74, entered the women’s department with a shopping bag that she took from a sales register.

Stocking began to select three items from display racks and concealed them in the JCPenney shopping bag. She then walked passed all points of sale and made no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise.

As Stocking exited the store through the mall entrance, she was detained and brought to the Loss Prevention Office.

Stocking admitted to the theft and took out the items that were concealed in the bag. She stole two black women’s tights and women’s legging with a total value of $54.

Stocking told deputies that the “incident was because of impulse.” She stated that she did not have any money on her to pay for the items.

Stocking was issued a trespass warning from the Indian River Mall. She was arrested and transported to Indian River County Jail where she was charged with shoplifting.
