VERO BEACH – A 53-year-old Vero Beach woman was arrested Sunday at the Indian River Medical Center after pinning a nurse with a walker, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Tonia D. Morrissette, who told deputies she was disabled, caused a disturbance with ER staff and security. Hospital personnel called the sheriff’s office to be present in the room.
When a deputy arrived, he heard Morrissette yelling and causing a disturbance in the room. The ER staff informed the deputy that she picked her walker up off the floor and aimed it at a nurse.
“I was also advised that Tonia pinned the nurse with the walker,” the deputy said.
Morrissette tried to leave the room once she saw the presence of law enforcement, but the deputy stopped her to gather information. Hospital security advised that they wanted her to leave the property.
When the deputy instructed Morrissette to leave the property, she did not comply. She was instructed a second time to leave, but refused, according to the report.
The deputy then grabbed Morrissette’s right hand in an effort to detain her, but she resisted by pulling away, the report said.
“Tonia grabbed the pointer finger on my left hand and twisted it in an upward motion, bending it backwards,” the deputy stated.
Morrissette’s arms were placed behind her back and moved upwards as a means of pain compliance by the deputy, but she began yelling and cursing at him.
Another deputy entered the room and placed handcuffs on Morrissette.
There’s no information on why Morrissette was in the ER, or why she was there in the first place.
Morrissette was arrested on charges of Felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Felony Resisting Arrest with Violence.
She was transported to the Indian River County Jail where bond was set at $15,000.
