FELLSMERE – A Vero Lake Estates man was arrested Friday morning in Fellsmere for possession of cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.

At approximately 1:10 a.m., an officer from the Fellsmere Police Department was on patrol in the vicinity of N. Willow and Lincoln Street observed a blue/green colored SUV driving in the area. The officer ran the license plate and determined that the registered owner, Shane Spaulding of Vero Lake Estates had a suspended license.

The suspension was a result of a previous drug arrest.

The officer obtained a photograph of Spaulding via his mobile data terminal while following it east on CR 512. The officer was able to drive alongside the SUV as it approached the traffic light at I-95 and confirm via the photograph that the driver was Spaulding.

Spaulding was nervous during the encounter and could not locate his vehicle registration even though it was in plain view.

A search of the vehicle revealed a hidden compartment underneath the cup holder area of the center console. In this compartment, the officer located three syringes and a cigarette box containing two crack cocaine rocks and a marijuana cigarette.

A computer check revealed that Spaulding was on probation and was out past his curfew. He told the officer he had a drug problem and that he “smoked crack and shot up pills” in the past few days.

The officer inspected his arms and noted several fresh needle marks. Spaulding told the officer he was “relieved to get arrested” because he “has had a problem with drugs for nearly 20 years.”

Spaulding was arrested for possession of cocaine, marijuana under 20 grams, and drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license. His vehicle was turned over to a relative and he was transported to the Indian River County Jail without incident.
