VERO BEACH – A Walmart loss prevention officer called the Indian River Sheriff’s Office about a man who spat on an employee.

Deputies were told that a customer, identified as 26-year-old Benjamin Massey, had spit on one of the employees at Walmart before leaving the store.

Massey was at the self-check out area inside the store when a woman had dropped a yogurt container on the floor. She told him that it was free, although she did not pay for the item.

The employee then collected the damaged item to write it up in claims when Massey got loud and aggressive with him.

Massey threw his drink and food down, then walked towards the employee. He then threw a fork down before spitting on the employee.

Video surveillance confirms the account of the incident. The video also showed Massey walking backwards out of the store to taunt the employee.

Deputies were then dispatched to a disturbance at the Indian River Mall involving Massey. He stated that he did spit on the person because he thought the Walmart worker was disrespectful.

Massey was placed under arrest for the Battery and transported to the Indian River County Jail without incident.
