VERO BEACH – The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on charges of felony grand theft in Vero Beach after he was caught stealing tools.

On Wednesday, Matthew Yingling called police after he noticed a Stanley tool bag and other items missing from his truck. He told deputies that he saw a gray Toyota pickup truck driving away at a high rate of speed.

A neighbor also noticed the same truck parked near some woods and spotted a man holding a green tool bag full of tools. When the neighbor realized what had occurred, he chased the pickup truck and got the license plate number.

Deputies traced the plate to 45-year-old James Donald Childers of Vero Beach. Another deputy found the truck a few streets away with Childers at the wheel.

All tools, valued at $1,080, were found.

Childers was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail where he was charged with Felony Auto Burglary, Felony Grand Theft, and driving on a suspended driver’s license.

Bond was set at $18,500.
