Deputies say an intoxicated man told children that he “likes boys” and “kills people” while at a playground in Vero Beach, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Concerned parents called law enforcement on Wednesday, July 3rd, at approximately 7:50 p.m. about a suspicious person at the playground near the Taylor Pointe Apartments in Vero Beach, the affidavit said.

The man, later identified as 63-year-old Andrew Harvey Volpe, was sitting on the “spring ride” at the playground. One of the concerned parents told deputies that Volpe told his daughter “he likes boys, kills people and has been in prison,” according to the report.

“Volpe yelled when I made contact with him, causing the children on the playground to stop and look. Other residents of the apartment complex gathered around also. I could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Volpe’s breathe when he yelled,” the deputy said.

The deputy determined that there was probable cause to charge Volpe with disorderly intoxication. He was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail.

After arriving at the jail, Volpe was combative with Corrections Deputies. He was later released on $500 bond.
