VERO BEACH – It happens to some of us. We enjoy hours of food, drinks, and laughter until the bill comes. But we make sure the tab is paid before leaving.
On Wednesday at approximately 4:00 p.m., Matthew David Thomas, 24, told the manager at Waldo’s Restaurant at the Driftwood Resort in Vero Beach that he couldn’t pay his bill of $90.59. Thomas said he only had $40.00 on him.
So, the manager called the Vero Beach Police Department to handle the matter. Officers asked Thomas if he was going to pay the bill, but he didn’t know how.
“I asked Thomas if he knew he only had $40.00 on his person before purchasing the food and alcohol from the restaurant and he stated ‘yes,'” the officer said in the report.
Police then asked Thomas to show them the $40.00, but then he couldn’t find it, according to the arrest affidavit.
So, the officer gave Thomas some time to call someone who might be able to help pay the bill. He tried his parents, but they were unable to help.
Based on the information obtained, Thomas was arrested and charged with Defrauding an Innkeeper. Bond is set at $1,500.00.
As of Thursday afternoon, Thomas is still in the Indian River County Jail.
