VERO BEACH – The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls about two homeless men fighting in the Sam’s Club parking lot in Vero Beach.

John Cornish, 66, and Mark Akins, 42, were seen fighting and pushing each other to the ground. Both individuals were in possession of open containers of beer.

Cornish and Akins were then seen stumbling in the roadway. Several motorists waited in the Walgreens parking lot in Vero Beach to watch the disturbance until law enforcement was on the scene.

As deputies arrived, they made contact with the two suspects who were “intoxicated and were unable to perform simple tasks,” according to the report.

Cornish fell into the bushes on the side of the road while speaking to a deputy, and was unable to spell his name and had to repeat himself.

Akins told deputies the two had been drinking throughout the day in the Sam’s Club parking lot.

An off-duty detective observed Akins pushing Cornish to the ground before spitting on him.

Akins and Cornish were transported to the Indian River County Jail where they were charged with disorderly intoxication.
