KBB and Vero Beach Chrysler Jeep Dodge Not So Great

VERO BEACH – (Editorial/Opinion) On Friday, I decided to sell our 2015 Toyota Tundra and get something else that is more fuel efficient since we do a lot of driving.

Someone told me about Kelly Blue Book, so I decided to investigate and use this information for my next column on Sebastian Daily. I went online and used KBB’s Instant Cash Offer tool. This is a great online resource that allows you to enter your vehicle information and receive an instant offer.

After completing the form, I received my official offer within seconds. At the bottom, it said that Vero Beach Chrysler Jeep Dodge wanted my vehicle.

A few minutes later, I received the following email:

“We have received the information on your Tundra 2WD Truck that you entered online using the Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer, and I have reviewed it with our Pre-Owned Manager.

Consider your vehicle SOLD!

Your Instant Cash Offer is valid for 72 hours from the time it was generated, so please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Again, I look forward to meeting you and working together!”

Wow, this letter was full of excitement and optimism! I then received a call from someone at the dealership.

Although still curious, I drove to the dealership on Friday, April 28 where they made me sit in the showroom for several minutes.

Finally, some guy claiming to be the used car manager walked out and introduced himself. He didn’t want to see the Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer that I printed out.

“Oh, we canceled our contract with Kelly Blue Book already today,” he said. “But I’ll be more than happy to look at your truck.”

While puzzled, I handed him the key, and he came back 2 minutes later with an offer much lower than the one I received from KBB. To make a long story short, I sold the vehicle to another dealership because the offer was better.

There are people who speak highly of Kelly Blue Book, but you have to be careful. Some dealerships offer better hospitality through an email than in person.

Most people do it the old-fashioned way by placing an ad on Craigslist or in the classifieds. But, this was a business vehicle and I wanted to build a relationship with a dealer. We expect to buy more vehicles in the future.

Vero Beach Chrysler Jeep Dodge is a great dealership, and I know several people who bought vehicles from them. But something should be done about this communication between KBB and the dealership.

The dealership called me Friday morning and wanted to know when I would arrive. They still had a contract with KBB at that point in time. That was 3 hours before my arrival.

For now, KBB is still sending customers to this dealership.
